Free Printable Elf on the Shelf Welcome Letter – Looking for a free printable Elf on the Shelf welcome letter to kick off the holiday magic in your home? You’re in the right place. This resource page explains the tradition, shares practical tips for U.S. families, and points you to legitimate free downloadable letters so your Scout Elf can make a memorable arrival.
The Elf on the Shelf tradition is a beloved Christmas custom for many American households. A Scout Elf arrives from the North Pole (often around Thanksgiving or December 1), watches over the kids during the day, and flies back each night to report to Santa. A welcome letter or arrival letter makes the first appearance extra special. It introduces the elf, gently explains the “no touching” rule (to protect the magic), and builds excitement for the weeks ahead.
Why Use a Free Printable Elf on the Shelf Welcome Letter?
A printed letter turns a simple elf placement into a full North Pole announcement. First-time families get a clear, kid-friendly explanation of the rules. Returning families get a cheerful “I’m back!” note that refreshes the tradition. Most free printables come as ready-to-print PDFs sized for standard U.S. letter paper (8.5 x 11 inches). You can leave the letter next to the elf, tuck it in a stocking, or place it on a pillow for morning discovery.
Popular options include first-arrival letters, welcome-back versions, and editable templates so you can add your child’s name or your elf’s name.

Tips for Using Your Free Printable Welcome Letter
Print on card stock for a sturdier feel, or regular paper if you’re in a hurry. Add a personal touch by writing your elf’s name or your child’s name in the blank spaces. Place the letter with the elf in a fun first hiding spot—on the mantel, next to the coffee maker, or with a small treat. Many parents start the tradition the weekend after Thanksgiving or on December 1 so it lasts through Christmas Eve.
Keep a matching goodbye letter ready for Christmas Eve so the farewell feels just as special. Laminate favorites if you want to reuse them next year.
