Why Amazing Grace Lyrics Are Free to Print?
John Newton wrote the text in 1772 (published 1779 in Olney Hymns). Because the original words are public domain in the U.S., anyone may reproduce the classic lyrics without permission or payment. Modern arrangements or added verses by living authors may still be under copyright, so stick to the traditional text when downloading free printables.
The hymn remains one of the most-sung songs in American churches, funerals, memorials, school programs, and community gatherings. A simple one-page PDF of the lyrics makes it easy to pass out for group singing.

Standard Amazing Grace Lyrics (Traditional Verses)
Most printable versions include these well-known stanzas:
- Amazing grace! how sweet the sound
That saved a wretch like me!
I once was lost, but now am found,
Was blind, but now I see. - ’Twas grace that taught my heart to fear,
And grace my fears relieved;
How precious did that grace appear
The hour I first believed! - Through many dangers, toils and snares
I have already come;
’Tis grace has brought me safe thus far,
And grace will lead me home. - The Lord has promised good to me,
His word my hope secures;
He will my shield and portion be
As long as life endures. - When we’ve been there ten thousand years,
Bright shining as the sun,
We’ve no less days to sing God’s praise
Than when we first begun.
(Some older printings include additional historical verses; the five above are the ones most commonly used in U.S. churches and gatherings today.)
Tips for Printing and Using the PDF

- For large groups, print multiple copies or project the lyrics from a tablet or computer.
- Large-print versions are helpful for seniors or outdoor events; many of the free PDFs scale well when enlarged.
