Free Printable Goose Clothes Patterns | 17″ & 23″ – Porch geese — those plastic or concrete lawn geese on front steps across the United States — have become a year-round decorating hobby. People dress them for the Fourth of July, Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas, and everyday seasons. If you want to sew those outfits at home, free printable goose clothes patterns exist. You do not need a commercial Simplicity envelope to get started.
This guide explains what those patterns are, which U.S. sizes they fit, and where to download legitimate free files. Every link below goes to a current source that actually offers a free pattern or free how-to. Paid Etsy listings are not mixed in as “free.”
What Are Goose Clothes Patterns?
Goose clothes patterns are sewing or crochet templates made for a statue goose, not a live bird. Most U.S. makers sew for a 17-inch or 23-inch porch goose. A few older concrete geese run about 22–26 inches tall.
A typical printable pack includes:
- A simple dress or tunic
- A bandanna, collar, or hat
- Sometimes wings or a bow
You print the pieces on US Letter paper (8.5 × 11 inches), tape multi-page sheets together if needed, cut the fabric, and sew. Beginner patterns usually need about 1/2 yard of cotton, plus bias tape or elastic for the neck.
These outfits are decorative. They sit on a statue in sun, rain, and wind, so outdoor-friendly cotton, canvas, or polar fleece lasts longer than thin quilting scraps.
Standard Sizes Used in the U.S.
Before you print, measure your goose.
| Common size | Where it shows up | What to print |
|---|---|---|
| 17 inches tall | Smaller porch geese and many newer retail figures | 17″ dress / bandanna files |
| 23 inches tall | The most common plastic porch goose | 23″ dress, crochet sets, embroidered dress |
| 22–26 inches tall | Older concrete “cement geese” | Adjust a 23″ pattern or draft your own |
Measure height from the base to the top of the head, then measure around the neck and around the widest part of the body. If your goose is between sizes, print the closer size at 100% first and tweak the side seams. Do not scale a PDF up or down until you have tested a muslin.

Useful free projects on that site include an everyday turtleneck, hoodie, tutu, beanie, patriotic set, rainy-day coat, pumpkin set, and holiday suits. Most use worsted-weight yarn and an H or I hook.
5. Draft your own pattern when nothing fits
House Goose explains how to draft a basic lawn-goose outfit with newspaper or a feed-bag liner, a 6-inch bowl, and a tape measure. The method is built for 22–26 inch plastic or concrete geese and can be adjusted for other sizes.

How to Print and Use a Goose Clothes Pattern?
- Open the PDF on a computer, not only on a phone.
- In the print dialog, set paper to US Letter and scaling to Actual size or 100%. Do not choose “Fit to page” unless the designer says to.
- Print a test page, then measure a marked 1-inch square if the file includes one.
- Tape multi-page pattern sheets on the overlap lines.
- Cut fabric with the grain as marked. Cheap cotton or an old pillowcase makes a good first muslin.
- Finish raw edges. Outdoor statues catch wind and rain; a zigzag or serged seam lasts longer than a raw cut.
Velcro or a wide back opening is easier than buttons when you change outfits every holiday.
Materials Most U.S. Sewists Already Have
- 1/2 yard cotton, canvas, or polar fleece
- Matching thread
- 1/4-inch or 3/8-inch elastic, or extra-wide bias tape
- Velcro dots or a strip for the back closure
- Ribbon or yarn for a bandanna tie
- Optional: lace, ric-rac, a small bow, or fusible interfacing for a collar
For crochet outfits, worsted-weight acrylic holds up better outdoors than cotton yarn, which can sag when wet.
Outdoor Tips for American Porches
- Choose colors that match the season you actually display: red/white/blue for Independence Day, orange for October, red and green or plaid for December.
- Take fabric outfits inside during ice storms and long wet stretches. Concrete geese stay put; cotton dresses do not.
- Avoid long trailing sashes that can blow into walkways.
- Do not put clothing on a live goose unless a veterinarian or experienced keeper has approved a safe, removable design. The patterns in this article are for statues.
FAQ
Are free printable goose clothes patterns really free?
The five sources linked above offer a free blog pattern, a free PDF, or a free drafting method. Some of the same designers also sell ad-free PDFs. Those paid files are optional.
What size should I print if my goose is 24 inches?
Start with a 23-inch pattern at 100%. Add to the side seams or hem if the body is thicker than the sample statue.
Can I sell outfits I make from these patterns?
Follow each designer’s pattern policy. Happy Bank KY Crafty Mom allows personal use of the posted files. Other sites may limit commercial use. Read the notes on the download page before you list anything for sale.
Is there a free pattern for every holiday?
Not in one pack. Sew a plain dress from a free printable, then swap bandannas, hats, and appliqué for holidays. Crochet designers such as Snappy Tots publish separate free seasonal sets throughout the year.
Do I need a sewing machine?
A machine is faster for a dress. The House Goose rectangle method and most Snappy Tots crochet patterns can be finished by hand.
Start With One Outfit
Print a 17-inch or 23-inch dress first, sew it in leftover cotton, and put it on the goose. Once the fit is right, reuse the same sloper for seasonal fabric. That is the practical way to build a porch-goose wardrobe without buying a new commercial pattern for every holiday.
