What the Puerto Rican Flag Looks Like and Means?
The flag of Puerto Rico (Bandera de Puerto Rico), also known as the Monoestrellada, features five equal horizontal stripes alternating red and white (three red, two white). A blue equilateral triangle sits on the hoist side with a large white five-pointed star in its center.
Common symbolism includes:
- The white star representing the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico and its people.
- The three sides of the blue triangle standing for the three branches of government (executive, legislative, and judicial).
- Blue representing the sky and coastal waters.
- Red stripes symbolizing the blood shed by warriors.
- White stripes representing liberty, victory, and peace.
The design was created in 1895 by Puerto Rican exiles in New York and officially adopted as the flag of the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico in 1952. Shades of blue have varied over time (darker or medium), but the overall layout remains consistent.
