What Is the Litany of the Blessed Virgin Mary?
This traditional litany is a series of invocations to Mary followed by the response “Pray for us.” It begins with calls for mercy from the Trinity, then lists titles that reflect Mary’s role as Mother of Christ, her purity, her power as intercessor, and her queenship. It ends with the Lamb of God petitions and a closing prayer.
The Church approves it for both public and private use. Many American Catholics pray it after the Rosary, during May and October Marian months, on Marian feast days, or whenever they seek Mary’s help.
Pope Francis added three new titles in 2020—Mother of mercy, Mother of hope, and Solace of migrants—so updated printables include these.
A Brief History
The litany developed in the Middle Ages and took its common name from the Holy House of Loreto in Italy, where pilgrims prayed it regularly. Pope Sixtus V formally approved it in 1587. Over time, later popes added titles such as Queen of the Most Holy Rosary and Queen of Peace. It remains one of the few Marian litanies approved for liturgical use.
You can read more background on the official EWTN page that presents the current English text of the litany.

A good printable fits standard U.S. letter-size paper (8.5 x 11 inches) and is easy to read. Many people keep a copy in a prayer book, on a home altar, or laminated for repeated use. Families and religious education groups often print several copies for shared prayer.
